Many new fans were led to an interest in the nature by fantastic exteriors of amazing movies about nature and a brilliant work of authors. They seek virgin locations untouched by human activities even in Central Europe’s conditions and they often meet a confrontation between their ideals and the surrounding reality.
Field biologists are already deprived of illusions and visit the habitats which look repulsive. They know that the optimal environment for the animals has to provide food, water, shelter, sense of security and possibility of a meeting sexual partner. Aesthetic criteria are quite minor.

Sparse vegetation provides food, nesting opportunities and shelter from bad weather and predators to birds. Situation and area of vegetation influence the settlement of various species and their abundance. Birds do not succeed in the current landscape with increasing acreage of built-up areas and intensively maintained lawns with a minimal amount of woods. Varied food supply in the form of a continuously evolving invertebrate communities and gradually ripening grass seeds and herbs is missing. Increasing traffic forces regular mowing wide strips around roads. Grant-supported agriculture is more legibly affecting communities along channels and balks. Consequences of such interventions are reflected among others in the food chain and are most strikingly reflected in the settlement of birds.

In the time of the pharaohs, Northern Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita) was highly revered as of special significance and even had its own hieroglyphic symbol. But now this bird has become the rarest in the Middle East – with just three wild individuals in Syria, plus one juvenile reared this year. Formerly thought to be extinct in the wild in the Middle East, in 2002 researchers were delighted when they discovered a tiny population near the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria, their last known refuge in the region.
The result of mist-netting birds in reed-beds on the Zrcadlo fishpond (80 ha, 10 ha of reed-beds, a part of Important birds area Rožďalovické rybníky) are presented in table. The ringing activity took place from August 7. to August 13. 2010. The most interesting phenomenon was the absence a migration birds from other place of nesting and a lot of birds ringing on this place in this year 2010 (C.E.S.). Belarus, Hrodno - Unusual case was observed in Hrodno (Belarus). Anna Maskaljova and her husband installed bird boxes opposite their home. Every years Common Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) have been nesting there. Always brown youngs were breeded but now normal pair has one brown young and two white youngs.
When tehy told me I wasn´t able to believe that it is possible. But it is true. I saw two white albinos with red eyes, pink legs and pink peckers.
In 2008 I passed two extraordinary weeks with my friend, an amateur ornithologist Karin Edler and we visited in total 13 zoos in Western Germany. The first one we went to was Zoo Duisburg near Düsseldorf. Such as the majority of european zoos Duisburg also has very good exposition standard and rich species collection.
South Bohemia, Dědovice – It was evening and it is going to storm. We sailed on canoe at Otava river looking and admiring rocks above the river. Suddenly we saw a big bird a several meters above water. It was near natural reservation Dědovické hillsides. At the first sight it looks majestic, but as we get near something was wrong. We recognized that bird is a young Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) and is injured. It tried to climb up to rocks again. It waved by wings and endeavored to reach rock edge using big claws. Everything was futile. It had a big bloody injury on head. So we sailed to the shore. Young Eagle-owl noticed us with one healthy eye and tried to hide in rocks.

Female birds are unfaithful to their mates. Research in the University of East Anglia, Seychelles, with Seychelles Warbler (Acrocephalus sechellensis) demonstrated that females ensure better survivabilityof their offsprings with extrapair copulation. Mating outside of the normal pairing can result in a higher diversity of specific genes which detect disease and trigger an immune response in offspring.
